WaterBase is a set of tools from the United Nations University for applying the SWAT model from USDA-ARS: "SWAT is a river basin scale model developed to quantify the impact of land management practices in large, complex watersheds."

HydroOffice 2010

This is a new software package to me. It is apparently intended to be a modular modeling systems with a Windows MS based GUI. All of the modules are listed as beta versions. One of the modules seems to require a user fee, while the others do not. I plan to download this and see how it runs.

BROOK90 4.4g

BROOK90 has been updated (2010 November 17). The current version is 4.4g, which I haven't downloaded to try out. I also haven't found a logfile that documents what changes have occurred over the releases. This seems to be a useful modeling tool, but also seems to be a 'one man show' and self-supported - which can be both beneficial and not beneficial.

Apparently a GUI version known as LWF-BROOK90 is available, but I can't find - and haven't requested - a download site

SWMM 5.0.021 (with LID controls)

SWMM has been updated again (some months ago, actually). The biggest change is that it now allows for 'LID controls'. A couple of builds ago (5.0.019, 2010 July 07), as stated in the Update History, "The ability to explicitly model five different types of Low Impact Development (LID) practices at the subcatchment level has been added." Basically, you now now have the ability to model retention (infiltration and evapotranspiration) in storage and conveyance elements. That is a significant modeling capability addition.


DRAINMOD Now Available for Free

DRAINMOD is similar to EnDrain ( and EAAMOD (

"DRAINMOD simulates the hydrology of poorly drained, high water table soils on an hour-by-hour, day-by-day basis for long periods of climatological record (e.g. 50 years). The model predicts the effects of drainage and associated water management practices on water table depths, the soil water regime and crop yields. It has been used to analyze the hydrology of certain types of wetlands and to determine whether the wetland hydrologic criterion is satisfied for drained or partially drained sites. The model is also used to determine the hydraulic capacity of systems for land treatment of wastewater."


Copan: Coordinate Geometry (COGO) for Surveying

This is a bit out of hydrology, hydraulics, and water quality, but a beneficial software application for those working with land surveying data - a common task associated with HHWQ. Anyway, I like it. From the author...

"Copan from Underhill Geomatics Ltd is a free tool for computing and managing plane land survey coordinates. It calculates coordinate geometry (COGO), processes field survey data, computes and adjusts map traverses, performs map checks, calculates areas and perimeters, transforms coordinates, and imports/exports Ascii files. It supports quadrant and whole-circle bearings, and gons as well as degrees-minutes-seconds. It runs on Windows and two mobile platforms, PalmOS and PocketPC. The Windows version also supports south- as well as north-based bearings. The mobile versions also calculate curves and have GPS positioning and navigation functions."


SSOAP from EPA...

The SSOAP toolbox is a suite of computer software tools used for quantification of RDII and facilitating capacity analysis of sanitary sewer systems. The toolbox is currently interfaced with the USEPA Storm Water Management Model Version 5 (SWMM5) for performing dynamic routing of flows through the sanitary sewer systems.


Unfortunately, this system is integrated into a proprietary GIS (ESRI ArcGIS), but here it is:

SUSTAIN (System for Urban Stormwater Treatment and Analysis Integration) is a decision support system to facilitate selection and placement of Best Management Practices (BMPs) and Low Impact Development (LID) techniques at strategic locations in urban watersheds. It was developed to assist stormwater management professionals in developing implementation plans for flow and pollution control to protect source waters and meet water quality goals. From an understanding of the needs of the user community, SUSTAIN was designed for use by watershed and stormwater practitioners to develop, evaluated, and select optimal BMP combinations at various watershed scales on the basis of cost and effectiveness. SUSTAIN is a tool for answering the following questions:

* How effective are BMPs in reducing runoff and pollutant loadings?
* What are the most cost-effective solutions for meeting water quality and quality objectives?
* Where, what type, and how big should BMPs be?


RMAP (Regional Morphology Analysis Package)

RMAP is an integrated set of calculation tools developed for manipulating, analyzing, visualizing, and archiving data on shoreline positions and beach profiles in a georeferenced environment on a personal computer. RMAP supports analysis of beach profile, channel or river cross-sectional data, and shoreline position data for engineering and science applications. Capabilities extend from generation of spatially referenced shoreline change maps to a large suite of beach profile analysis tools.;40


Groundwater Hydrology Course (MIT OpenCourseWare)

MIT has a program that's been going on for a few years now called OpenCourseWare. In short, the course materials are posted on the www for all to view and use. That's not much different from several universities. I guess the idea is that MIT courses in the OpenCourseWare program are set up to be more 'open' (as the name implies) for all to download and use the material. Check it out...


SMath Studio

I came across what appears to be a very promising mathematics software application, especially for engineers: SMath Studio. This is a symbolic mathematics package with a WYSIWYG workpad interface similar to MathCAD, which I really like. The software appears to be in the development stages, but has been stable for me. Try it out and - if you like it - please let the developers know you appreciate it!


IHA: Indicators of Hydrologic Alteration

From a description by the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality: "Software for Understanding Hydrologic Changes in Ecologically-Relevant Terms: IHA is a software program that assesses 67 ecologically-relevant statistics derived from daily streamflow records. For instance, IHA software can calculate the timing and maximum flow of each year’s largest flood or lowest flows, then calculates the mean and variance of these values over some period of time. Comparative analysis can then help statistically describe how these patterns have changed for a particular river or lake, due to abrupt impacts such as dam construction, or more gradual trends associated with land- and water-use changes."



From the PC-IHACRES web site; "Identification of unit Hydrographs And Component flows from Rainfall, Evaporation and Streamflow data. PC-IHACRES uses a transfer function/unit hydrograph (UH) method for continuous simulation, catchment-scale (spatially lumped), rainfall-runoff modelling. It was developed jointly by the Centre for Ecology & Hydrology, United Kingdom, and the Centre for Resource and Environmental Studies at the Australian National University. PC-IHACRES can assist hydrologists and water resource engineers. Its applications include investigations in small catchments instrumented for special studies, regional studies using larger catchments, and quality assurance of strategically important streamflow and rainfall records. PC-IHACRES can be used in higher education as a teaching aid for unit hydrograph theory and application. From the web site; "PC-QUASAR is a water quality and flow model for river networks. It is designed to be used by river regulatory authorities and water/sewerage utility companies to help manage river water quality. The software is now available to be downloaded at no charge, as it is no longer supported by CEH (see below). PC-QUASAR can provide distributions of flow and quality at key sites, allowing river regulators to set effluent consent levels designed to meet river quality objectives. PC-QUASAR can also provide river flow and water quality estimates at each reach boundary over a period of time, allowing proposed changes in the river's use, flow or quality to be assessed. The following determinands can be modelled: river flow, pH, nitrate, temperature, E coli, biochemical oxygen demand, dissolved oxygen, conservative pollutant or tracer."

From the WATFLOOD web site; "WATFLOOD is a distributed hydrological model suitable for both flood forecasting and streamflow modeling."

From the Kenue web site; "Green Kenue (formerly EnSim Hydrologic) is an advanced data preparation, analysis, and visualization tool for hydrologic modellers. It provides a state-of-the-art interface, integrating environmental databases and geospatial data with model input and results data. Green Kenue provides complete pre- and post-processing for the WATFLOOD and HBV-EC hydrologic models. Also included is a 1D 'reach scale' unsteady hydrodynamic flow solver, Gen1D."

Development of WATFLOOD began in 1975 and has been continuing in the Department of Civil Engineering at the University of Waterloo.

EPA SWMM v5.0.016 - Hargreaves Method

The Hargreaves method to compute daily evaporation has been included in the latest release of SWMM. I am unsure of whether this is the original or a modified version of the Hargreaves equation/method. The document with this release did not include detailed information on how the method was implemented, though you can check the source code (available on the EPA SWMM site).

EnDrain (EnDrainW) Update from Roland Oosterbaan...

Roland Oosterbaan was nice enough to write regarding EnDrain (EnDrainW)...

"The page was renamed into On the latter page I summarize all completely freely available software made by me. In addition the program EnDrainW was simply renamed into EnDrain. Previously EnDrainW indicated the Windows version of EnDrain as opposed to the DOS version. All DOS versions of my programs were removed from my website. Hence the tail "W" was no longer required."

Roland has developed an excellent suite of software applications, including EnDrain, for hydrologic analysis - and all are free to download and use! Especially if you are interested in agricultural drainage and/or flatland/wetland hydrologic response, be sure to check these out.


New SWMM version released (5.0.015)

Big News!

"Storage unit nodes have a new optional property named Infiltration that can store Green-Ampt infiltration parameters for the unit and thus allow it to serve as an infiltration basin. The Green-Ampt infiltration model was modified to explicitly include the effect of ponded water depth on infiltration rate."

This has been a major "wish on the SWMM wish list" for some time.


Leon Hellberg SWMM Macros

Leon Hellberg has written some code to provide interoperability between SWMM, Autocad Civil 3D, and Excel. These are undocumented and - as Leon points out - not for the "uninitiated", but he has graciously provided these files/macros for you to use!

- Creating AutoCAD entities from a SWMM .inp file (nodes, conduits and subcatchments)
- Retrieving elevations from a Civil 3D DTM and calculating subcatchment slopes



AutoCAD2EPASWMM is a small AutoCAD script for defining, drawing, and exporting subcatchments from AutoCAD to SWMM. It allows you to select any number of polylines in AutoCAD and will automatically create an output file in the location you specify. The script creates a SWMM input file that contains the catchment area and vertexes so that the catchment can be drawn in SWMM.


AdcpXP - Acoustic Doppler Current Profiler Visualization

AdcpXP is a customized software developed at The University of Iowa's IIHR—Hydroscience & Engineering (IIHR). The software provides a wide range of flow characteristics derived from velocities measured by Acoustic Doppler Current Profilers (ADCP). In this initial stage, the software uses standard output files produced by Teledyne RD Instruments’ Rio Grande and StreamPro ADCPs ( AdcpXP is a stand-alone application fitted with graphical user interfaces that was developed with C++ and operates on Microsoft’s Windows platforms.

The software complements TD RDI’s WinRiver software that is primarily related to the estimation of stream discharges. AdcpXP brings in new visualization and post-processing capabilities to obtain additional flow characteristics enhancing the value of the measurements collected at fixed points or from moving vessels. The analysis can be conducted in a point, vertical, transect or at the reach scale. A summary of the AdcpXP capabilities is listed below.


Water Resources Engineering eBook

A Water Resources Engineering eBook has been posted as a series of PDF files by the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) at Kharagpur. This is one in a series as part of an effort known as the National Programme on Technology Enhanced Learning (NPTel).

"The main objective of NPTEL program is to enhance the quality of engineering education in the country by developing curriculum based video and web courses. This is being carried out by seven IITs and IISc Bangalore as a collaborative project. In the first phase of the project, supplementary content for 129 web courses in engineering/science and humanities have been developed. Each course contains materials that can be covered in depth in 40 or more lecture hours. In addition, 110 courses have been developed in video format, with each course comprising of approximately 40 or more one-hour lectures. In the next phase other premier institutions are also likely to participate in content creation."

Visual AEM (Analytical Element Modeling)

Visual AEM was released a few months ago as the successor to Visual Bluebird. Visual AEM is "a graphical user interface for single and multi-layer analytic element modeling of (mostly) steady-state groundwater flow and numerical/analytical modeling of vertically-averaged contaminant transport". The application looks very much like Visual Bluebird, but does include several new features.

WaterCAST (the Water and Contaminant Analysis and Simulation Tool)

The Catchment Modelling Toolkit folks at eWater have released a development of their E2 modeling framework known as WaterCAST.

"The intent of WaterCAST is to provide managers of predominantly rural, and peri-urban, catchments with the capability to make informed decisions as to how changes in catchment management influence the quantity and quality of runoff to receiving waters. It is especially helpful for looking at water balance and for managing the factors affecting movement of sediments, nutrients and salts across catchments and in streams."

"WaterCAST differs from most catchment models in that it does not have a fixed structure and set of algorithms. It is actually a flexible framework that requires the user to consider and select a combination of models best suited to the problem at hand. So the user builds the specific modelling tool he or she wants according to the level of complexity appropriate to the problem and the available data and knowledge."


ANUGA Hydrodynamic Modeling

ANUGA Hydrodynamic Modeling is a software implementation of a hydrodynamic model which is specifically designed to model wetting and drying processes. ANUGA is a joint development project between Geoscience Australia (GA) and the Australian National University (ANU).

nofdp IDSS (nature-oriented flood damage prevention Information and Decision Support System)

The nofdp IDSS is an information and decision support system within the framework of the “nature oriented flood damage prevention” research and development project. The goal of the research and development project is to support integrative river basin management that takes regard of spatial planning, water management and ecology for small river catchment areas, especially to improve protection against flood damage.

The nofdp IDSS was developed cooperatively by Björnsen Consulting Engineers in Germany and Deltares in the Netherlands. This work was sponsored by EU funds from the Interreg III B Program. Project partners are:

Note on CDM version of SWMM5

On the CDM version of SWMM5, Robert Dickinson informs me: "This version is a QA/QC version of SWMM 5 that was used to more closely compare the SWMM 4 to SWMM 5 results using extra data variables. It should not be used for modeling."

General Ocean Turbulence Model (GOTM)

GOTM is an ambitious name for a one-dimensional water column model for marine and limnological applications. It is coupled to a choice of traditional as well as state-of-the-art parameterisations for vertical turbulent mixing. The package consists of the FORTRAN90 software, a number of idealised and realistic test cases, and a scientific documentation, all published under the GNU public license. GOTM is, of course, not complete (and will never be). Whoever is missing any feature in GOTM, is warmly invited to contribute to GOTM and add her or his personal preferences or needs.

General Estuarine Transport Model (GETM)

GETM is a 3D numerical model simulating the most important hydrodynamic and thermodynamic processes in natural waters. The model is general in the sense that it can be applied to various systems, scales and specifications. The model includes for example flooding and drying of tidal flats, flexible vertical and horizontal coordinate systems, different turbulence models integrated from GOTM, and is a Public Domain model published under GNU Public Licence.

WHATIF: Watershed Health Assessment Tools Investigating Fisheries

WHATIF is software that integrates a number of calculators, tools, and models for assessing the health of watersheds and streams with an emphasis on fish communities in the Mid-Atlantic Highland region. The tool set consists of hydrologic and stream geometry calculators, a fish assemblage predictor, a fish habitat suitability calculator, macro-invertebrate biodiversity calculators, and a process-based model to predict biomass dynamics of stream biota (the BASS model). The tools can be used to assess conditions and associated stressors in aquatic ecosystems, to examine causes of impairment, and to forecast ecological outcomes of habitat alterations and fisheries management actions. WHATIF also supports screening analysis, such as prioritization of areas for restoration and comparison of alternative watershed and habitat management scenarios.

VSAFT: Variably Saturated Flow and Transport Simulation Software

Subsurface/Soil Hydraulics Analysis Software

VSAFT2 is a MSWindows Graphical User Interface (GUI) for setting up, running, calibrating, and doing inverse simulation on variably saturated flow and transport using either a rectangular or triangular element mesh in 2 dimensions. VSAFT2 couples a simple interface for quickly setting up problems with a powerful inverse parameter estimation method.

Spreadsheet Tool for River Environmental Assessment Management and Planning

StreamPlan is a spreadsheet application for policy analysis of alternative water quality management strategies at a river basin level. Strategies include uniform emission reduction and effluent standard based strategies, ambient water quality criteria and least-cost strategies, total emission reduction under minimized costs, mixed strategies, local and regional policies, and strategies with economic instruments. StreamPlan includes a detailed model of wastewater generation at the municipal level with a water quality model and policy analysis tools at the river basin scale.


SSIIM for Windows

The Sediment Simulation In Intakes with Multiblock option model (SSIIM) is for teaching and research for hydraulic/river/sedimentation engineering. It solves the Navier-Stokes equations using the control volume method with the SIMPLE algorithm and the k-epsilon turbulence model. It also solves the convection-diffusion equation for sediment transport, using van Rijn's formula for the bed boundary. A water quality module is included.

The software application has an interactive graphical grid editor creating a structured grid. The post-processor includes vector graphics, contour plots, profiles, etc which can run simultaneously with the solver, enabling viewing of intermediate result. A post-processor viewing coloured surfaces in 3D is also made, as a separate program.

The software has been around for a while, but a new version for MS Windows has been recently released (2007 September 26), so I thought I would post on it. (I have not tried the latest release, but it would need to be a signficant improvement for SSIIM to have surpassed CCHE2D).

REALM (REsource ALlocation Model)

Water supply system simulation package. System can be configured as a network of nodes and carriers representing reservoirs, demand centres, waterways, pipes, etc. Flexible "what if" tool to address various options (new operating rules, physical system modifications, etc)


CDM version of SWMM5

CDM makes available their version version of SWMM5 for download and use. There's a few more options and the GUI element edit boxes have a lot more variable options. Otherwise, it looks, feels, and acts like the EPA version (from what I've have discerned).

TRAGIC++ (interactive forest stand simulation program)

I know this may seem like a lot of focus on tree stuff, but canopy effects (such as interception) can be mighty important in HHWQ modeiling/simulation.

In TRAGIC++, the development of a forest is simulated as the collective dynamics of individually growing trees, each of which competes with the others for light, space and nutrients. Interaction is possible by removing or planting single or groups of trees and by changing the environmental conditions (light an nutrients).

Simple Light Interception Model (SLIM)

Another software package useful for developing precipitation interception and canopy evapotranspiration model input parameters. If nothing else, you can make some cool images with it.

Storm Damage Assessment Protocol (i-Tree)

The i-Tree Storm Damage Assessment Protocol Utility establishes a standard method to assess widespread damage immediately after a severe storm in a simple, credible, and efficient manner. This assessment method is adaptable to various community types and sizes, and it provides information on the time and funds needed to mitigate storm damage.

I haven't used or tried this software (unlike 95% of the other stuff on the HHWQ blog site) and the the i-Tree site looks a bit tree-huggerish, but this looks like a good tool.

USFS: Forest Vegetation Simulator (FVS)

For those of you intersted in precipitation interception and canopy evapotranspiration, the Forest Vegetation Simulator (FVS) can be a useful tool for developing input parameters.

SWRC-Fit (Soil Water Retention Curve Fitting)

The soil hydraulic parameters for analyzing water movement in variably saturated soil can be determined by fittig soil hydraulic model to a soil water retention curve. SWRC-Fit performs nonlinear fitting of 5 soil hydraulic models (Brooks and Corey, van Genuchten, Kosugi, Durner, Seki) to a measured soil water retention curve.

WeatherFile: utility to convert weather files of different formats.

Rain: generate long-term series of precipitation values using parameters from existing daily or monthly precipitation records.

Graphical User Interface (GUI) for computational models of surface-water hydraulics. The system is both a tool and framework that provides an easy to use interface to a variety of environmental hydraulic models.

Fityk: peak fitting (curve fitting)

Nonlinear fitting of analytical functions (especially peak-shaped) to data (usually experimental data). There are also people using it to remove the baseline from data, or to display data only. Good for analysis/processing of bathymetric sounding/sonar data when setting up estuary/river models.

DESIRE: Direct Executing SImulation in REal Time

Interactive modeling, simulation of dynamic systems, immediate comparisons of live models. OPEN DESIRE is listed as free (other than shipping and handling). DESIRE/2000 is not free, but I can't discern the difference.

Open Workbench: project management software

Nice alternative to Microsoft Project. Not a hydrologic, hydraulic, or water quality software application, but - like OpenOffice - a great software application for your work. Gantt charts, process schedules, etc...

SciCraft: data analysis tool

Easy-to-use graphical user interface (GUI) for basic data analysis stuff as well as more advanced statistics, chemometrics, and "artificial intelligence"

Erosion Control Materials Design Software ECMDS - North American Green

Blatantly commercial, but free to download and use. Very useful software for design of vegetated channels, including analysis reports.

3DFlow (Department of Civil Engineering at Kansas State University)

Visualization of three-dimensional groundwater flow associated with horizontal wells, partially penetrating wells and fully penetrating wells.

USGS Water Data for the Nation

Development of the Modular Modeling System appears to be continuing, the a native Microsoft Windows version would be helpful (as opposed to a CYGWIN implementation)

USGS National Flood Frequency (NFF) Software

Excellent software for quick estimates of peak runoff

* Obtain estimates of flood frequencies for sites in rural (non-regulated) ungaged basins.
* Obtain estimates of flood frequencies for sites in urbanized basins.

MIKE SWMM - available as freeware

DHI-WEH produces some excellent hydrology, hydraulic, and water quality software applications. Unfortunately, these are some of the most expensive such software applications available anywhere.

MIKE SWMM (from DHI-WEH) is now available free of charge to anyone who would like to use it: freeware. It is based on SWMM4.4x and does not support the latest version of SWMM (5.x).

The company is focusing development resources on MIKE URBAN, phasing out MIKE SWMM, MOUSE, and MIKE STORM.

NetSTORM: urban watershed simulations

NetSTORM is CDM's computer program for precipitation data assessment and rapid long-term urban runoff simulation.

A Milwaukee Model for LID Hydrologic Analysis

Calculations for the preferred approach have been formulated in a spreadsheet that allows the user to input the amount of retention provided by each of several kinds of LID components, and then see immediately a recalculated hydrograph that reflects the predicted effect of the aggregate retention volume. The spreadsheet, which has been dubbed the ”LID Quicksheet”, is expected to be incorporated along with its documentation into the MMSD stormwater management guidance.

BURBS Spreadsheet (nitrogen mass balance)

BURBS is a Lotus 1-2-3 version 2 spreadsheet that helps you to construct a nitrogen mass balance for a residential area in a place like Long Island. Much of the U.S. Atlantic Coastal Plain is similar to Long Island:

The efficiency of radiation conversion is modified by the effects of nutrition, soil drought (the model includes continuous calculation of water balance), atmospheric vapour pressure deficits and stand age. The carbon produced by the canopy is allocated to leaves, stems and roots, using dynamic equations that update the state of the system on a monthly time step.
